Texas Sodomy Supreme Court Case

US Supreme Court just struck down Texas' sodomy law. And by they way they ruled, they've effectively struck down all states' sodomy laws. I think it's about damn time.

Tie this in with the recent Canadian rulings and I'd say it's been a good week for gay rights, and by that, a good week for everyone's rights.

I echo that it's about damn time.

Watching CNN last night they were talking about the state's arguements for this case, saying they were so repulsive that some of the more conservative judges were trying to bail them out.

I'll avoid state bashing and just agree that it is a good day for US human rights.

btw, only four of the state's sodemy laws specified homosexuals, the 8 or so banned any couples from using anything but the missionary position.

The most important aspect of this decision is that it affects all the sodomay laws, because the decision was based on the right to privacy, not equal rights.

One of the ones that argued for Texas was the Harris County D.A., ironic in that my gf is working at that D.A.'s office this summer and hopes to get a job there after graduating. She doesn't working directly with the main D.A. and is glad. She can't stand him.

Okay, so I'm reading this article on Yahoo news about Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist saying he'd back a motion to keep marriage only between a man and woman. And somehow he's equating a gay marriage and what would go on in the house with other "illegal" activities such as prostitution and drugs.

*sigh* How are they gonna prevent what goes on in the bedroom? Secret police? Mini cameras/mics? Nosy neighbors?

All I know is, if and when some of the gay members of this board get married, I want an invitation.

Frist would also support a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman. I think a Senate committee is already discussing such an idea, which is extremely scary. Constitutional amendments are not something to be done lightly (and sure as hell should not be used to deny people basic rights).

It disgusts me how those upset with the ruling keep comparing it to incest, polgamy, child molestation, etc. They refuse to see the difference.

If i ever get married, I'll make sure to send you an invitation, crazy. Gotta have my other twin brother there, you know.

And yeah, this is the crap that happens when you don't have a even balence of power in our democracy. The republicans control the house, senete, white house and Supreme Court. By some miracle the SC ruled without thier heads up thier ass, so now the other branches are going to be stupid without any checks and balences to stop them.

Too bad it is not comforting that all americans have lost rights under this administration. I think when this Presidentsy is looked at in the future it will be defined by two things, War mongering, whether just or not, and the loss of individual rights. It's been over a year and people still don't realize how much we lost with the Homeland Security act.

It's awesome to see the echo effect - I was wondering if this ruling has anything to do with canada's move to legalise gay marriage. The bigots might cry and moan but you can't stop progress.

I was arguing law with a friend of mine who objects to gay marriage due to his conservative religion, and even he agreed there is a difference between saying "You shouldn't" and saying "You can't".
